Robots Cleaning Toilets?

At the Humanoids Summit, I saw fast robots, a laundry-folding robot, and one that moved like a toddler on a sugar rush. I saw exactly one robot that was clearly designed for fighting. I even high-fived a giant robotic hand, because that felt like the right thing to do in the moment.

All of it was impressive.

Then there was a robot holding a scrubbing sponge.

I was completely intrigued. And, it offered an opportunity to be outside on a gorgeous December afternoon so I took it. And, that’s when I met Gatlin Heavy.

One day, very soon, when you step into a corporate restroom to… uh… you know, take care of business, you just might meet Gatlin Heavy, too.

Surfer vibes, serious intent

The founders of Gatlin Robotics, Isaac Qureshi and Zach Zweig Vinegar, came across like relaxed surfer engineers. Easy to talk to. Low drama. Very California. Underneath that laid-back delivery was a very focused idea.

Let robots clean bathrooms.

Bathrooms in large commercial buildings are still cleaned almost entirely by human crews. Most existing cleaning robots stop at floors.

People worry about robots taking jobs. In this case, that is exactly the point. Tasks involving surfaces, tight spaces, or manipulation still fall on janitorial teams already strained by chronic labor shortages and high turnover.

Gatlin is not trying to make cleaning glamorous. They are trying to make it less dependent on human labor. Is that about replacing humans? In an industry that cannot hire or retain enough workers, yes. That is the problem they are solving.

Teleoperation on purpose

At the Summit, Gatlin Heavy was running on a Unitree G1 humanoid platform. One of the cofounders was teleoperating the robot live using an Apple Vision Pro, guiding its movements while the other cofounder stood nearby, watching closely.

This was not presented as a workaround or a temporary hack. It was the plan.

Teleoperation lets Gatlin deploy robots into real environments sooner, learn from real cleaning jobs, and gradually build autonomy where it actually makes sense. Navigation and balance are handled by the robot. Fine manipulation stays with a human operator, at least for now.

Autonomy, in this model, is something you earn through repetition and data, not something you promise in advance.

A young company moving quickly

Gatlin Robotics is very young, only a few months old at the time of the Summit. Even so, they are already part of the NVIDIA Inception program and are aiming for an early 2026 launch.

That timeline is ambitious, but the scope is refreshingly narrow. They are not trying to solve general-purpose robotics. They are not chasing spectacle. They are starting with bathrooms, trash handling, and other facilities work that is necessary, repetitive, and hard to staff.

Why the sponge matters

A robot with a sponge is not flashy. It is not going to win a footrace or backflip across a stage. But it represents something important.

Robotics moves forward when machines take on the work that quietly keeps the world running. The jobs that are essential but rarely celebrated. The ones most people would happily hand off.

Watching Gatlin Heavy scrub, while standing in the sun for a few stolen minutes between conference sessions, felt less like a demo and more like a practical thought experiment.

Maybe this is where robots start.
